The European Union will require smartphones and other portable electronic devices to have user-replaceable batteries starting February 18, 2027, as part of its broader Battery Regulation aimed at reducing electronic waste and extending device lifespans.

The regulation, formally known as EU Regulation 2023/1542, mandates that batteries in smartphones, tablets, and laptops must be easily removable by the end user without the need for special tools or adhesives. Manufacturers will also be required to offer replacement batteries for at least five years after a device is released.

The rule applies to all smartphones sold in the EU market, regardless of where they are manufactured. It prohibits design practices that hinder battery replacement, such as strong adhesives or software locks that prevent third-party batteries from functioning.

Industry analysts note that the regulation will force smartphone makers to redesign internal components, particularly affecting current unibody designs that prioritize water and dust resistance. Balancing repairability with durability will require significant engineering changes, especially for premium models that rely on seamless construction.

The goal is to reduce electronic waste, extend the lifespan of devices, and strengthen the right to repair.

The regulation is part of a phased implementation of the EU’s battery framework, which was approved in 2023. While some provisions have already taken effect, the requirement for user-replaceable batteries in portable electronics is set to begin in early 2027, giving manufacturers over two years to adapt their designs and supply chains. Specific impacts on major manufacturers are already being assessed. For Samsung, one of the largest smartphone suppliers in Europe, the rule may necessitate redesigning its Galaxy series to accommodate accessible battery compartments while maintaining performance and ingress protection ratings. Although the regulation does not mandate hot-swappable batteries—where a battery can be replaced while the device remains powered on—it does require that the replacement process be simple enough for average users to perform without technical expertise or professional assistance. Beyond environmental goals, the rule supports the EU’s broader right-to-repair initiative, which seeks to empower consumers to fix their own devices and reduce reliance on manufacturer-controlled repair networks. By ensuring replacement parts remain available for years, the regulation aims to counteract planned obsolescence and promote longer device usage cycles. As the February 2027 deadline approaches, technology companies are expected to begin testing new internal layouts, securing battery suppliers capable of meeting longevity and safety standards, and updating product documentation to guide users through the replacement process.
