The Crisis: A Looming Halt to Car Production
Carmakers in the EU are “days away” from closing production lines, the industry has warned, as a crisis over computer chip supplies from China escalates. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) issued an urgent warning on Wednesday, stating that its members – including volkswagen, Fiat, Peugeot, and BMW - are now relying on ”reserve stocks but supplies are dwindling.”
“Assembly line stoppages might onyl be days away. We urge all involved to redouble thier efforts to find a diplomatic way out of this critical situation,” said Sigrid de Vries, ACEA’s director general.
Mercedes-Benz is actively searching globally for alternative semiconductor sources, according to its chief executive, Ola Källenius. The chip shortage is also impacting Japan, with Nissan’s chief performance officer, Guillaume Cartier, stating the company is only “OK to the first week of November” in terms of supply.
The Root Cause: Nexperia and Geopolitical Tensions
Beijing banned exports of Nexperia chips in response to the Dutch government’s decision on September 30th to take over the Netherlands-headquartered company and suspend its Chinese chief executive, following security concerns raised by the US. This action represents a significant escalation in geopolitical tensions impacting the global supply chain.
Last week, car companies in the UK, EU, and japan – including Volvo, Volkswagen, Honda, and Nissan – warned that the ban on exports from Nexperia factories in China could halt production lines. The industry is currently working through reserve stocks, but supplies are rapidly dwindling.According to ACEA’s survey, some members are already anticipating imminent assembly line stoppages.
Impacted Manufacturers and Production Lines
The following manufacturers are known to be directly affected by the Nexperia chip ban:
- Volkswagen: Potential for significant disruption across multiple European plants.
- Fiat: Production lines in Italy and Poland are at risk.
- Peugeot: French production facilities facing potential shutdowns.
- BMW: German manufacturing operations threatened.
- Mercedes-Benz: Actively seeking alternative chip sources globally.
- Volvo: Production in Europe
