European Union consumers browsing Apple’s website will now see colorful energy labels accompanying iPhones and iPads. These labels grade each device’s energy efficiency, durability, and repairability, reflecting Apple’s adherence to new EU regulations.
The A-to-G ratings cover energy efficiency, battery lifespan, repairability, water and dust resistance, drop impact resistance, and battery endurance per cycle.These labels are visible on product pages in EU countries and within the environmental section of product tech specs.
Apple also provides a downloadable PDF with further details,including battery capacity,scratch resistance,and the guaranteed minimum years of security updates. Printed versions of the labels will be included in the boxes of new iPhones and iPads sold in the EU.
Apple published a 44-page document detailing its labeling process, citing ambiguities in the EU’s regulations.
The EU’s new energy Labelling regulation for smartphones and tablets prescribes several interim test methods that contain unclear language. As a result, some metrics on the energy label are influenced by the choices made by manufacturers and test labs interpreting the regulation. This paper’s goal is to explain Apple’s chosen test methodology and the resulting scores that were, in some cases, voluntarily lowered to account for potential differences of interpretation. Apple indicated its current iPhone models could qualify for an “A” grade in energy efficiency. However, the company voluntarily downgraded to a “B” as a precaution, fearing inconsistent interpretations of EU testing protocols by autonomous labs. A similar approach was taken with drop resistance scores, as Apple questions whether standardized EU drop tests accurately reflect real-world durability.
