The European Union has fined AliExpress 550 million euros for failing to prevent the sale of illegal, counterfeit, and dangerous products on its platform, according to reports from BioBioChile and Yahoo. The penalty follows a regulatory crackdown on the e-commerce giant for non-compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates that large online platforms implement stricter measures to combat the trade of illicit goods.

The fine targets the company’s failure to police its marketplace effectively. According to reporting from MuyComputerPRO and Independent en Español, the European Commission found that AliExpress allowed the distribution of unsafe items and falsified merchandise, violating the safety and consumer protection standards established by EU law.

The 550 million euro penalty is rooted in the requirements of the Digital Services Act. According to El Boletín, the European Union’s decision focuses on the platform’s inability to combat the sale of dangerous and illegal goods.

Counterfeit goods also played a central role in the regulatory action. According to Yahoo, the fine is a direct result of the company’s failure to implement sufficient safeguards against the listing of these illegal items.
