EU Funding Controversy: Video Campaign for Independent Ireland Sparks Political Debate
Video Promoting Independent Ireland is Funded by EU Political Party
A political advertisement for Independent Ireland has stirred controversy. The video, which promotes the party, states it was “Paid for by PDE-EDP Patri Démocratic européen,” a European political party that receives EU funds.
Political advertisements by EU groups in domestic elections are against the rules. The sponsored videos appeared on social media accounts of the European Democrats. They featured Ciaran Mullooly, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and a former journalist.
In the video, Mullooly urges viewers to vote for Independent Ireland, claiming it will bring “real change.” He names specific candidates and highlights their commitment to making independent decisions for their communities.
Mullooly’s message also encourages voters to choose Independent Ireland candidates for common sense governance. He emphasizes the importance of supporting local representatives who prioritize community needs over party alignments.
The video ends with the Independent Ireland logo and a call to “Vote No. 1.” Initially, the ad was sponsored but is now online without promotion to a targeted audience.
Independent Ireland stated that the ad is no longer paid for. A spokesperson confirmed that the video was made by Mullooly and had no production costs. They mentioned a minimal ad spend by the EDP of €14.07, which they justify because they are a European political party, not a parliamentary group.
European Union rules prohibit funding campaign costs for national parties or their candidates.
