European Parliament Approves New Commissioners

The European Parliament will approve Ursula von der Leyen’s second team of commissioners today. After months of political disputes, the EU executive can return to its duties.

Support for Ukraine After US Elections

Support for Ukraine has shifted among European capitals following the recent US elections. European leaders initially reacted with denial and anger regarding Donald Trump’s victory but have now accepted the need for continued support for Ukraine. Trump aims to negotiate peace and reduce aid to Kyiv, which currently relies on the US for military assistance against Russia.

European countries expressed a commitment to support Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” They are transitioning from immediate arms shipments to more sustainable support, including investments in Ukrainian arms production. Recently, outgoing European commissioner Didier Reynders announced that €1 billion from Russian assets will go to Ukraine’s defense industry.

Despite ongoing discussions about Ukraine’s long-term security, there is a concern that without US guarantees, European nations will hesitate to provide substantial support. However, there is a growing acknowledgment that Ukraine’s stability impacts Europe directly.

EU-UK Trade Relations

After numerous British think-tank reports on improving post-Brexit relations, Brussels’ Bruegel institute has released its own recommendations. Following the 2020 trade deal, which has hurt the UK economy, there is room for closer ties.

Ignacio García Bercero, a former EU trade official, proposed a quick negotiation of three agreements to strengthen ties. These include a veterinary deal to align UK food standards with the EU, a linkage of emissions trading systems to avoid carbon taxes for UK exporters, and a tailored youth mobility agreement.

Bercero emphasizes the need for the UK to act quickly before the EU faces distractions from other global issues. He will discuss these proposals at Chatham House in London next week.

What to Watch Today

  1. Nordic and Baltic leaders will meet in Sweden.
  2. Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola will hold a press conference after the vote on new commissioners.
