EU Seeks Active Role in Gaza Peace Process & Stability Efforts

Brussels – The European Union is seeking a more active role in facilitating peace in Gaza and is prepared to dedicate resources to support stability in the region, according to statements released on Monday. The move comes as EU diplomats met with the director of the Board of Peace, Nikolay Mladenov, to discuss the evolving situation and coordinate future steps.

The meeting, held in Brussels, brought together the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, and foreign ministers from across the 27-nation bloc with Mladenov, a former Bulgarian politician and United Nations diplomat appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump to lead the Board of Peace. Discussions also encompassed the ongoing war in Ukraine and potential new sanctions against Russia, highlighting the complex geopolitical landscape facing the EU.

“We want to be part of the peace process in Gaza and also contribute with what we have,” Kallas stated prior to the meeting. Following the discussions, she indicated that Mladenov had provided an update on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and outlined the Board of Peace’s activities and strategy, emphasizing the need for an EU presence in both stabilization and humanitarian efforts.

“It was good to hear from Mladenov that it’s really right now trying to improve the situation, that he sees this in the same way, that actually they also need us there contributing,” Kallas added. The EU’s involvement is complicated by the need for Israeli approval for several key initiatives, including the planned training of Palestinian police forces in Gaza and the operation of the EU’s border assistance mission at the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

The EU’s pursuit of a greater role in Gaza follows a period where it felt sidelined by the U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
