European allies are reinforcing their unwavering support for Ukraine, emphatically stating that any peace negotiations with Russia must include Ukraine as a central participant. This message was underscored in a statement released Sunday, signed by leaders from France,Germany, poland,Italy,Finland, the United Kingdom, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and further elaborated upon in a recent European Council text.
A Unified front for a Just Peace
The core principle uniting these nations is the demand for a “fair and lasting peace that provides stability and security.” This peace, they assert, must be firmly rooted in international law, upholding the principles of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. A key tenet is the inviolability of international borders, rejecting any modification through force – a direct response to Russia’s actions.
The statement builds upon the ideas presented in the initial Sunday declaration, emphasizing the need for security guarantees for Ukraine should a peaceful resolution be achieved. This is crucial, given Russia’s history of disregarding previous agreements designed to safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty.the European Union and its member states are prepared to contribute to these security guarantees, leveraging their respective capabilities and competencies.
Upcoming talks with the US and NATO
To further coordinate efforts, the signatories of Sunday’s statement will participate in teleconferences this Wednesday with the President of the United States. These meetings, organized by German chancellor Friedrich Merz, will also include NATO secretary General Mark Rutte, signaling a broad transatlantic commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Security guarantees represent a cornerstone of any long-term peace horizon. The aim is to ensure Russia adheres to any agreed-upon terms,a stark contrast to its past behavior. Having a coalition of nations willing to act as guarantors is considered vital for building trust and ensuring the sustainability of any peace agreement.
Ukraine’s Path to EU Membership
The European Council text also reaffirms its support for Ukraine’s ongoing journey towards EU membership. It acknowledges ukraine’s “inherent law to choose their own destination” and pledges continued assistance along this path. This commitment underscores the long-term vision of integrating Ukraine more fully into the European community.
Unconditional Ceasefire Remains the Priority
The European position, shared by Spain and articulated by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on social media, is clear: any ceasefire must be unconditional and verifiable. Albares stated unequivocally, “We want a high unconditional and verifiable fire as a first step towards a fair and lasting peace. Ukraine and the EU must be at the table of any negotiation. The aggression cannot have a reward.”
This stance directly challenges Russia’s demands for territorial concessions as a prerequisite for a ceasefire. Most EU countries reject the notion that aggression should be rewarded with sovereignty over occupied territories, and insist that Ukraine must be involved in any negotiations concerning its future. The focus remains on achieving a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
