Background: Somaliland’s⁢ Quest for Recognition

Somaliland, ‌a self-declared state in the Horn of​ Africa, unilaterally declared independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991, following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, which had ⁣ruled for 22 years.⁢ Despite establishing a relatively ⁢stable government and holding several democratic elections, Somaliland’s independence has not been recognized by the Federal Republic of Somalia, the african‍ Union, or the United Nations.

Mogadishu ‌maintains that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia.This position is supported ‍by ‌the African Union,which,on January⁣ 27,2024,reiterated its rejection of any initiative recognizing Somaliland as‌ independent,and the UN.

The Proposed Deal⁣ and Somaliland’s Stance

On January 27, 2024, Somaliland President Muse Bihi abdi announced‌ on X (formerly Twitter) Somaliland’s​ readiness to join the Abraham Accords. These ​accords, brokered‍ by the United‌ States, saw‍ the United Arab ⁢Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco normalize ⁤relations with Israel in recent years. the potential deal with Israel reportedly​ involves Somaliland gaining international recognition in exchange for granting ​Israel access to ​the port of Berbera.

Somalia and International Reactions

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud strongly condemned the ⁣potential agreement. According to Reuters, Mohamud characterized israel’s recognition‍ of Somaliland‍ as an‍ “illegal aggression” and a violation of international‍ law. He specifically criticized Israeli Prime ⁤Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions.

Several countries have echoed Somalia’s condemnation. Turkey, ‍Saudi Arabia, ⁢Qatar, Egypt, and Nigeria have all expressed opposition to the deal. ⁢The African Union,as stated above,reaffirmed its support for somalia’s territorial integrity.

The European Union’s Position

The European Union emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial⁢ integrity. EU diplomacy spokesman Anouar El Anouni stated this position on January 27, 2024, according​ to reporting by Euractiv.
