EU Reaffirms Commitment to US Trade Deal Amid Tariff Concerns
Despite recent tariff threats adn ongoing trade tensions,the European Commission remains ”fully committed” to securing a trade deal with the United States. Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic security, affirmed Brussels’ dedication to constructive engagement with Washington on Monday.
Sefcovic’s statement, posted on X, followed discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The EU’s focus remains on fostering a strong economic partnership despite headwinds.
The commitment comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all EU imports, starting June 1. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen intervened, leading to Trump agreeing to postpone the planned tariff increase until July 9.
