He ⁤continued‌ to excel, earning further All-Star awards in 1985 and 1989, this​ time as a⁣ corner-forward, making him ​one of ‌a select⁢ few players to be recognized for his skill in both defensive and attacking​ positions.

The three ‌All-Star winning years ‍(1979,1985,and 1989)⁤ all saw Monaghan claim the Ulster Senior Football Championship‍ title as detailed on GAApedia. ⁢ In 1985, Hughes was also part of the⁢ Monaghan team that secured victory in the ⁢National Football ​League as noted by monaghan GAA.
