UK Sports to Play Key Role with £900M Investment in Events, Grassroots

The United Kingdom will see a “transformational investment” of more then £900 million in major sporting events and grassroots sports in the coming years, the government announced. This funding aims to bolster the UK’s role in hosting international competitions and fostering community engagement through sports.
Key events set to benefit from over £500 million include Euro 2028, the European Athletics Championships next year, and the men’s and women’s Tour de France Grand Departs in 2027. These events are expected to drive economic growth and inspire participation across the nation.
In addition, at least £400 million will be directed toward upgrading grassroots sports facilities nationwide. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) outlined this investment following last week’s Spending Review, emphasizing its commitment to supporting local sports initiatives.
England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland will jointly host Euro 2028. The DCMS anticipates that this men’s football tournament alone could generate up to £2.4 billion in socio-economic value.

Other significant events on the UK’s sporting calendar include the women’s Rugby World Cup in England this summer, the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the Invictus Games in Birmingham in 2027, founded by the Duke of Sussex.
