While some researchers suggest we may be approaching a “biological human longevity ceiling,” a new study published in Nature Communications indicates that this limit hasn’t yet been reached – but progress isn’t uniform across Europe. The research, analyzing data from almost 400 million inhabitants across 450 regions in 13 Western European countries between 1992 and 2019, reveals a growing divergence in longevity trends.
A European Study on an Unprecedented Scale
The study collected mortality and demographic data from national statistics offices across 13 Western European countries, including Spain, Denmark, Portugal, and Switzerland. Researchers harmonized the data, accounting for variations in regional size and data detail, and then recalculated annual gains in life expectancy at birth for each region between 1992 and 2019. This indicator reflects mortality across all ages. Sophisticated statistical methods were used to identify underlying trends, accounting for short-term fluctuations caused by events like the 2003 heatwave or seasonal flu outbreaks between 2014-2015. The year 2019 was chosen as the cutoff date for analysis, as the long-term effects of the coronavirus pandemic on these trends remain unclear.
First Finding: Human Longevity Has Not Hit Its Limits
The study’s first key finding is that the limits of human longevity have not yet been reached. Regions consistently demonstrating the highest life expectancies – those indicated as “champions” in the study’s data – continue to show gains of approximately two-and-a-half months per year for men and one-and-a-half months per year for women, at a rate comparable to previous decades. These regions include areas in Northern Italy, Switzerland, and some Spanish provinces.
In France, Paris and surrounding areas, along with the Anjou region and areas bordering Switzerland, also showed strong progress, reaching a life expectancy of 83 years for men and 87 years for women in 2019. This suggests that continued improvements in lifespan are still possible.
Second Finding: Regional Diversity Since the Mid-2000s
However, the picture is more complex when considering regions with lower life expectancies. While these “lagging” regions experienced rapid gains in the 1990s and early 2000s, progress slowed significantly around 2005. In some areas, like East Germany, Wallonia in Belgium, and parts of the United Kingdom, life expectancy gains have nearly stalled. This marks a departure from the earlier period of convergence in regional life expectancies across Europe.
The result is a growing regional discrepancy, with some areas continuing to advance while others fall behind. This contrasts sharply with the catch-up momentum observed in the 1990s.
Third Finding: The Decisive Role of Mortality at Ages 55-74
Researchers investigated the reasons behind this shift, focusing on age-specific mortality rates. The divergence in life expectancy isn’t explained by changes in infant mortality or mortality rates in those over 75. Instead, the key factor appears to be mortality rates between the ages of 55 and 74.
In the 1990s, this age group saw a rapid decline in mortality, thanks to advancements in cardiovascular treatments and changes in lifestyle factors. However, since the 2000s, this improvement has slowed. In some regions, mortality rates between 55 and 74 are now rising, particularly among women in France’s Mediterranean coastal regions and in Germany. Because a significant number of deaths occur within this age range, stagnation or an increase in mortality has a substantial impact on overall life expectancy trends.
While the study doesn’t pinpoint the exact causes of this trend, factors like risk-taking behaviors – including smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition – and a lack of physical exercise are potential contributors. The economic downturn of 2008 may also have played a role, exacerbating regional disparities and impacting the health of populations in certain areas.
What’s Next?
The study’s findings offer a dual message. While extending life expectancy remains possible, as demonstrated by the “champion” regions, progress isn’t guaranteed for everyone. For the past fifteen years, parts of Europe have been lagging behind, largely due to rising mortality rates between ages 55 and 74. The future of longevity in Europe may depend on the ability to reduce these regional disparities, ensuring that all areas have the opportunity to benefit from advancements in healthcare and public health.
The question isn’t simply how far we can extend life expectancy, but rather which parts of Europe will be able to do so.
