Total car sales across the European Union,Britain,and the European Free Trade Association reached 1.09 million units in July,according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). ACEA reports a 7.4% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. this growth follows the removal of subsidy schemes in some countries in 2023, which surprisingly coincided with increases of 58% in Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales and 83.6% in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) sales in July.
The shift towards electrified vehicles is accelerating. Registrations of battery electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid cars rose by 39.1%, 56.9%, and 14.3% respectively, collectively accounting for 59.8% of all registrations – up from 51.1% in july 2023.
Despite the overall positive trend in EV sales,Tesla experienced a significant downturn in Europe.Sales dropped by 40.2%, reducing its market share from 1.4% to 0.8% year-on-year. This marks the seventh consecutive month of declining market share for the American automaker.
