The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) has launched the Healthy Urban Design Index (HUDI), a tool assessing the health and sustainability of 917 European cities. The index uses 13 indicators across urban design,sustainable transport,environmental quality,and green space accessibility.

Cities are categorized by population size—large metropolitan, metropolitan, medium, small—to ensure fair comparisons. The 13 indicators include urban compactness, housing density, infrastructure for walking, cycling, public transport, air pollution levels, heat mitigation, and green space access. Each indicator receives a score from 0 to 10, which are combined into a total HUDI score.
