Griggs Secures Gold adn Team Title for ireland
Nick Griggs of Tyrone delivered a commanding performance at the European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa, Portugal, on December 10, 2023, winning gold in the men’s under-23 race. The 20-year-old completed the course in 17 minutes and 47 seconds, finishing 12 seconds ahead of france’s Aurelien Radja.
Griggs’ victory was pivotal in securing the team gold medal for Ireland. Callum Morgan and Niall Murphy contributed strongly with finishes in eighth and tenth place, respectively, allowing Ireland to triumph over france and Spain in the team standings.
This win marks a significant milestone for Griggs, who previously earned 3,000m gold at the 2019 European Under-20 Championships in Tallinn. He had accumulated four silver medals across various European competitions before finally reaching the top of the podium.
Hickey Earns Bronze in Women’s Under-20 Race
Earlier in the day, Wexford’s Emma Hickey, aged 16, achieved a notable result by securing a bronze medal in the women’s under-20 race. This performance highlights the growing strength of Irish youth athletics on the European stage.
