European Powers Reaffirm Support for Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions with Russia

European Foreign Ministers Reaffirm Support for Ukraine

Foreign ministers from the five largest European powers met in Warsaw on November 19, 2024. They gathered to confirm their support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski emphasized the importance of involving Ukraine in any peace discussions. He stated, “Imposing peace solutions contrary to Ukraine’s interests will harm the country’s stability.” He stressed that any resolutions to end the war must be crafted in close cooperation with Ukrainian officials.

The meeting was partly driven by concerns over the incoming US president, Donald Trump. Critics feared that Trump might propose a peace deal favoring Russia. Sikorski remarked on the need to reassure Ukraine that its interests will not be overlooked.

Tensions also rose after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a one-on-one call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, criticized by Ukrainian and Polish leaders.

The foreign ministers present included those from Germany, France, Italy, and the incoming EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Ministers from Spain and the UK joined remotely.

Sikorski noted that the meeting was prompted by a recent large-scale attack on Ukraine and the upcoming US presidential election. This gathering allowed Poland to reinforce its influential role in European discussions on Ukraine, especially after being excluded from previous talks involving other major powers.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the need for continuous commitment to peace in Europe, especially amid potential shifts in US policy. She called for European nations to strengthen NATO and increase defense spending.

All ministers underlined the importance of strong US ties. Sikorski stated that only through these relationships can Europe effectively address threats from Russia and other nations.
