European Spacetech TEC Raises $160M to Advance Sustainable Space Exploration
European spacetech company The Exploration Company (TEC) has raised $160 million in Series B funding. This brings its total funding to nearly $230 million. TEC was founded in 2021 by Hélène Huby, a former VP at Airbus, and a team from Airbus and ArianeGroup. The company focuses on developing and operating reusable spaceships for logistics in space exploration.
TEC is working on Nyx, a reusable and in-orbit refillable spacecraft. Nyx can launch from any heavy rocket and travel to any space station. It can return to Earth with up to 3,000 kg of cargo, which is the largest down-mass capacity available globally. The cost for this service will be 25% to 50% lower than that of other vehicles.
TEC has become the first European company to sign a Space Act Agreement with NASA. This year, it signed its first major contract with the European Space Agency (ESA), winning a position in the European space capsule competition. The company plans to launch its mid-size capsule, Mission Possible, in 2025, which will carry 300 kg of customer payloads. The maiden flight of Nyx is scheduled for 2028 to deliver cargo to the International Space Station.
Hélène Huby sees the funding round as proof that Europe can support ambitious entrepreneurs. She stated, “98% of our shareholders are European, showing that the continent can finance bold ideas. Space will shape humanity’s future, and I aim to contribute to a peaceful and cooperative future, aligned with our European values.”

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Hélène. Congratulations on successfully raising $160 million in your Series B funding round! Can you tell us how this funding will impact the future of TEC and your projects?
Hélène Huby: Thank you for having me! This funding is crucial for us. It not only brings our total funding to nearly $230 million but also validates our vision and strategy. With this capital, we’re poised to accelerate the development of Nyx, our reusable and in-orbit refillable spacecraft, as well as expand our talented team of 200 employees and enhance our production capabilities. This is a significant step toward making logistics in space more accessible and efficient.
Interviewer: Nyx sounds like a groundbreaking project. Can you elaborate on its features and the advantages it offers over existing solutions?
Hélène Huby: Absolutely! Nyx is designed to be versatile; it can launch from any heavy rocket and travel to any space station. Its ability to return to Earth with up to 3,000 kg of cargo gives it the largest down-mass capacity currently available globally. Essentially, we are looking to reduce launch costs by 25% to 50% compared to other vehicles, making space logistics more economical and feasible for a broader range of missions.
Interviewer: It’s impressive to see TEC securing a Space Act Agreement with NASA and a significant contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). How do you see these partnerships influencing TEC’s role in European space exploration?
Hélène Huby: These partnerships are pivotal for us. Signing a Space Act Agreement with NASA marks a historic moment for a European company, showing our capability and ambition on the international stage. Our contract with ESA positions us competitively for future contracts in the European space capsule competition, and we are excited about our upcoming mid-size capsule, Mission Possible, scheduled for launch in 2025. These collaborations not only bolster our credibility but also enhance innovation and knowledge sharing, essential for pushing the boundaries of space exploration.
Interviewer: You mentioned that 98% of your shareholders are European. Why is this important, and what does it signify for the European space industry?
Hélène Huby: This statistic is a testament to the support and belief in European entrepreneurship and innovation. It symbolizes that Europe can finance ambitious ideas and contribute significantly to space exploration. I believe space will shape humanity’s future, and we want to ensure that this development aligns with our European values of peace and cooperation. This is only the beginning; we’re paving the way for more bold initiatives in Europe.
Interviewer: As demand for space launches continues to grow, what do you see as the key opportunities for TEC within this expanding market?
Hélène Huby: The current demand for launches far exceeds supply, creating unique opportunities for us. With our cost-effective solutions and the capabilities of Nyx, we can tap into various sectors, including scientific research, commercial satellite deployments, and resupply missions to the International Space Station. The future is bright, and we are ready to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Interviewer: Thank you for sharing your insights, Hélène. It’s an exciting time for TEC and the European space industry!
Hélène Huby: Thank you! We’re thrilled about what lies ahead and appreciate the support from our investors and partners as we embark on this journey.
The funding round was led by Balderton Capital and Plural, with participation from other investors including Bessemer Venture Partners and NGP Capital. David Thévenon from Balderton said TEC is set to lead in European space exploration. Khaled Helioui from Plural noted that the demand for launches greatly exceeds supply, creating a significant opportunity.
The funding will help develop and test Nyx, grow the 200-member team, and increase production capacity.
