BusinessCode Champions European Tech Amid Data Sovereignty Concerns
BONN, Germany (AP) — Amid growing global discussions surrounding digital sovereignty and data protection, BusinessCode, a European company, is signaling a strategic shift toward increased adoption and promotion of European technology alternatives. The move will affect both internal operations and external communications, the company said Wednesday.
Employee Survey Highlights Demand for European Tech
An internal survey conducted by BusinessCode revealed strong support for the initiative. According to the survey, 90% of employees expressed a desire for greater integration of European technology within the company. Furthermore, 55% indicated thay are considering switching to European alternatives in their personal lives, citing independence, data protection, and enhanced security as primary motivations.
Strategic Need for Digital Sovereignty
Bernd Daamen, Legal Counsel and authorized representative at BusinessCode, emphasized the importance of digital sovereignty in the current geopolitical climate. “Especially in times of geopolitical uncertainties and growing dependency on non-European tech giants, digital sovereignty becomes a strategic need,” Daamen said.”As a European company, we not only have the opportunity, but also the duty to promote alternatives and to show them ourselves.”
Navigating the Transition to European Tools
The transition to European alternatives presents challenges, as many widely used tools, such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, are deeply embedded in daily workflows. though, BusinessCode views this as an opportunity for innovation. Daamen noted that establishing new standards requires early adopters willing to explore uncharted territory. “Standardization does not happen on its own – it needs users who are ready to break new ground,” he said.”If we do not actively use European technologies, they cannot establish themselves.”
Showcasing promising European Solutions
BusinessCode recently highlighted several promising European technology solutions, including NextCloud, an open-source platform for collaboration and data management; OnlyOffice, an office and project solution; and AWORK and Meistertask, tools for agile project management. The company also spotlighted Mistral AI, a French startup whose chatbot, Le Chat, prioritizes data protection and European values, offering a potential option to established systems.
A Call to Action for Rethinking Digital choices
Daamen urged a broader reevaluation of technology choices. “Europe has excellent developers, smart ideas, and strong underlying technologies,” Daamen said. “What is often missing is visibility – and the courage to choose the seemingly alternative standards.”
BusinessCode is encouraging other companies and individual users to explore European alternatives, suggesting European-Alternatives.eu as a resource for discovering a wide range of European technologies.
Shaping Europe’s Digital Future
CEO Martin Schulze emphasized the need for proactive engagement in shaping Europe’s digital future. “We are not allowed to leave the digital future of Europe to others. We have to design it ourselves,” Schulze said. The company plans to conduct a survey via linkedin to gather further insights from customers and non-customers. Company representatives acknowledged the inherent irony of using a U.S.-based platform for this purpose.
