former US Ambassador accuses Trump of Favoring Putin Over Ukraine
A former United States ambassador to Kyiv has accused Donald Trump of prioritizing Vladimir Putin‘s interests at the expense of Ukraine. Bridget Brink, in an editorial published in the Detroit Free Press, stated she resigned due to disagreements with Trump’s foreign policy.
“I was an ambassador of the United States in Ukraine.I resigned because of Donald Trump’s foreign policy,” Brink wrote in the editorial.
According to Brink, while she respects a president’s authority to shape foreign policy with Congressional oversight, the Trump management’s approach involved pressuring Ukraine, the victim, rather than Russia, the aggressor.
“I respect the president’s right and duty to determine the foreign policy of the United States—with the appropriate brakes and counterweights in the United States Congress,” Brink wrote. “Unfortunately, as the start of the Trump administration, politics has consisted in putting pressure on the victim, Ukraine, rather than the aggressor, Russia.”
Brink stated this approach made it impossible for her to continue serving in her role. “Under thes conditions, I could no longer apply the administration policy in good faith and I considered that it was my duty to withdraw me,” she wrote.
Brink emphasized the importance of defending democracies and opposing autocrats to protect U.S. interests. “I think that the only way to guarantee the interests of the United States is to defend democracies and to oppose autocrats. Peace at all costs is not peace at all, it is appeasement,” Brink added, warning that allowing Putin to redraw borders would not stop with Ukraine.
Brink, appointed by former President Joe Biden, assumed her post in Kyiv in May 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of ukraine. She resigned from her position in April.
