French biotech company Abivax is the best-performing stock in the stoxx 600 this year, with a significant lead over the others, according to CNBC.
Shares are up 1,441% sence the start of this year, a staggering figure even for a clinical-stage biotech company known for its price volatility and high risk. By comparison, the next best-performing stock is British miner Fresnillo, which is up 373% year-to-date.
Abivax’s strong rally began with a 510% rise on July 23, a day after the company reported data from a late-stage trial of its lead product obefazimod, an ulcerative colitis drug.
Since then, the stock has continued to rise on investor optimism about the company’s product line, as well as unconfirmed rumors of a takeover bid by a larger competitor.
“We’re constantly in talks with the big pharma companies,” CEO Marc de Garridel told CNBC on Tuesday, but stressed that was largely out of his company’s control.
“We don’t control the actions of the big companies. But we’re certainly excited about the work that we’re doing, and we’ve been welcomed back by the medical community as a possible next standard for the treatment of ulcerative colitis,” he added.
The study results, presented in July, were from an eight-week trial of the drug in patients with moderate to severe active ulcerative colitis, a type of chronic inflammation of the intestines. The company plans to announce full-year treatment results in the second quarter of 2026.
2026 is Full of Catalysts
Abivax has a number of possible catalysts in 2026. For its lead product obefazimod, the company plans to file for regulatory approval next year.”We hope this will mean a launch in the third quarter of 2027 in the US,” De Garridel said.
Along with ulcerative colitis, the company has a program in mid-stage growth for Crohn’s disease, another inflammatory condition of the digestive system. It plans to announce the results of these studies by the end of 2026.
However, the company is currently losing money. As it did not generate revenue, the net loss widened significantly in the nine months of 2025 to 254 million euros, compared to a loss of 137 million euros last year. This is mainly due to the cost of running the one-year clinical trial of obefazimod.
