Eni‘s HPC6: Europe’s New supercomputer Powerhouse

Italian Energy Giant Leverages Supercomputing Muscle to Accelerate Decarbonization Efforts

Milan, Italy – In a major leap for European supercomputing, Italian energy multinational Eni has unveiled HPC6, a groundbreaking system that claims the title of most powerful supercomputer on the continent. With a peak computational power of 606 petaflops per second (PFlop/s), HPC6 ranks fifth globally, according to the latest TOP500 list, making it the world’s first industrial-use supercomputer to crack the top five.

“This is an excellent result that ranks HPC6 as the first supercomputer in Europe, the world’s first industrial-use supercomputer, and the only non-US system among the top 5 in the world,” Eni announced.

The launch of HPC6 marks a pivotal moment in Eni’s aspiring decarbonization strategy. CEO Claudio Descalzi emphasized the crucial role of technology in achieving net-zero emissions.

“Technological advancements allow us to use energy more efficiently by reducing emissions and promoting the development of new energy solutions,” Descalzi said. “We have integrated supercomputing throughout our entire business chain, transforming it into an indispensable lever for achieving Net Zero and creating value.”

A Multifaceted Tool for a Sustainable Future

HPC6 will be instrumental in a variety of applications, accelerating Eni’s progress towards a more sustainable future:

Optimizing Carbon Capture and Storage: HPC6 will enhance the accuracy of geological and fluid dynamic studies for CO2 storage, helping Eni optimize carbon capture and storage projects – a key technology for mitigating climate change.

powering Next-Generation Batteries: The supercomputer’s processing power will accelerate research and development of next-generation batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, paving the way for a cleaner transportation sector.* Streamlining Biofuel Production: HPC6 will help Eni streamline the production and distribution of biofuels, contributing to a more sustainable transportation sector.

A Technological Leap Forward

HPC6 represents a notable leap forward from Eni’s previous supercomputing systems,HPC4 and HPC5,which had a combined peak performance of 70 PFlop/s. The new system utilizes a hybrid configuration of CPUs and GPUs, with over 3,400 compute nodes and nearly 14,000 GPUs, maximizing both computational performance and energy efficiency.

The launch of HPC6 has sparked conversations about the role of technology in tackling climate change.

“It’s inspiring to see companies like Eni investing in innovation to create a more sustainable future,” said Maria, a sustainability advocate. “I’m excited to see what they can achieve with this new supercomputer.”

Her friend David, a tech enthusiast, was equally impressed. “It sounds like a real game changer,” he said. “It’s fascinating how technology is playing such a crucial role in tackling climate change.”

Eni’s HPC6: Unlocking a lasting Future Through Supercomputing Power

Sarah: Hey Mark, have you heard about Eni’s new supercomputer, HPC6? It’s a pretty big deal!

Mark: No, I haven’t. Eni? Is that teh energy company?

Sarah: Exactly! They just unveiled HPC6, and it’s apparently the most powerful supercomputer in all of Europe.

Mark: Wow,that’s extraordinary. What makes it so special?

Sarah: Well, it’s capable of performing 606 petaflops per second, which puts it among the top five supercomputers in the entire world! That’s an insane amount of processing power.

mark: Okay, that is seriously impressive. But what does a supercomputer like that actually do?

Sarah: For Eni, it’s all about pushing their decarbonization efforts. They’re using HPC6 to optimize carbon capture and storage projects, develop next-generation batteries, and even streamline biofuel production.

Mark: So, basically, they’re using this supercomputer to find new and innovative ways to tackle climate change?

Sarah: Precisely! Eni’s CEO, Claudio Descalzi, said it himself: “Technological advancements allow us to use energy more efficiently by reducing emissions and promoting the development of new energy solutions.”

Mark: That’s encouraging to hear. Are there any real-world examples of how HPC6 is making a difference?

Sarah: Sure! For example, HPC6 will help them create more accurate models for CO2 storage, making carbon capture projects more effective. It’s also speeding up research into next-generation batteries, which are crucial for electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Mark: That’s amazing! It sounds like this supercomputer could really change the game when it comes to sustainability.

Sarah: Absolutely! It’s a powerful example of how technology can be used to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our planet. It’s inspiring to see companies like eni investing in innovation for a better future.
