In a significant milestone, Europe generated more electricity from sunshine than coal last year, marking a major stride in the region’s transition to clean energy, according to a recent report. Solar power, fueled by a record surge in new installations, generated 11% of the EU’s electricity in 2024, outpacing coal’s 10% share. The role of fossil gas also continued to shrink, plummeting to 16%.
"This is a significant moment," said Beatrice Petrovich, lead author of the report. "Coal, once the backbone of Europe’s power sector, is now being outshone by solar, the new rising star."
Coal’s dominance, which once powered Europe’s industrialization, has been steadily declining. The fuel’s share in the EU power sector halved since its peak in 2007, while clean sources like wind, solar, and hydropower have surged. Solar, the fastest-growing power source, thrived despite a less sunny year, thanks to increased installations.
"Solar’s growth is a clear sign that investing in clean energy pays off," said Jenny Chase, a solar analyst at BloombergNEF. "As solar output increases, we’re seeing a corresponding reduction in fossil fuel burning."
Europe’s shift away from coal gained momentum in 2024, with coal use decreasing in 16 out of 17 countries. Germany and Poland, the two heaviest coal burners, both saw significant drops – 17% and 8% respectively. Meanwhile, fossil gas’s share continued a five-year decline, since 2020, with decreases in 14 out of the 26 EU countries using gas power.
These shifts occurred despite a slight increase in electricity demand, following two years of decline due to the impacts of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The EU responded with an energy-saving plan and an acceleration of the clean energy transition.
"Europe’s success in reducing coal and gas use is due to a combination of policy support and market forces," said Gregory Nemet, an energy researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "Renewables are helping with affordability, energy security, and air quality, and Europe is embracing these benefits."
The EU is well on track to meet its 2025 solar target of 400 GW, reaching 338 GW last year. With current growth rates, the 2030 goal of 750 GW is also within reach.
To fulfill its clean energy potential, the report’s authors emphasize the need for investments in technologies like batteries and smart meters, to balance renewable energy supply with demand.
As Europe’s energy landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the continent is steadily turning its back on coal, and embracing a cleaner, sunnier future.
Sunshine Takes the Led: A Bright Future for Europe
The shift from coal to solar in Europe’s energy mix is not just a statistic; it’s a testament to the continent’s commitment to a enduring future. This monumental shift, driven by innovation and technological advancements, signals a clear departure from fossil fuels and towards a brighter, cleaner tommorow. With solar power now powering 11% of the EU’s electricity, Europe stands as a shining example for the world, demonstrating that a green energy future is not only possible but also increasingly attainable. as solar installations continue to boom and renewable energy solutions advance, Europe’s power sector is poised for a dazzling transformation, one where sunshine reigns supreme.
## A Brighter Future Powered by the Sun
The year 2024 marks a turning point in Europe’s energy landscape. For the first time, solar power has outstripped coal-fired electricity generation, a testament to the continent’s unwavering commitment to clean energy. As Beatrice Petrovich, led author of a recent report, aptly states,”Coal, once the backbone of Europe’s power sector,is now being outshone by solar, the new rising star.” [[[1]]
This triumph is the culmination of years of conscious effort and investment. Europe’s energy transition has witnessed the consistent decline of coal’s dominance, mirrored by the meteoric rise of renewables like wind, solar, and hydropower. [[[1]] Notably, even with a less sunny year, solar power saw remarkable growth fueled by record-breaking new installations. [[[1]] As Jenny Chase, solar analyst at BloombergNEF, emphasizes, “Solar’s growth is a clear sign that investing in clean energy pays off.” [[[1]]
Europe’s accomplished pivot towards solar represents a beacon of hope for the global energy future. It demonstrates that a clean, sustainable energy system is not only achievable but also economically viable. The continent’s journey serves as a powerful example to the world, illustrating the potential for rapid, transformative change within the energy sector. As Europe continues to bask in the sunshine of its clean energy future, the world watches and takes note.
