They noticed “gray” smoke​ and ash coming through open windows, prompting their family to evacuate to stay with relatives near Porangahau village.Galbraith described the local fire station as “chocka” with⁢ fire trucks, police, and a Salvation Army support vehicle.

“I just noticed all this grey outside and thought holy shingos – what is that? We had a bit of ash and dust, smoke ash coming from windows being open,” Galbraith said to ‌RNZ as reported by Radio​ New Zealand.
