Piri Galbraith, another resident, told RNZ that their house is less than a kilometer from one of the fires. They noticed “gray” smoke and ash coming through open windows, prompting their family to evacuate to stay with relatives near Porangahau village.Galbraith described the local fire station as “chocka” with fire trucks, police, and a Salvation Army support vehicle.
“I just noticed all this grey outside and thought holy shingos – what is that? We had a bit of ash and dust, smoke ash coming from windows being open,” Galbraith said to RNZ as reported by Radio New Zealand.
