A security guard at Endeavor Evanston Hospital sustained injuries Thursday night when a patient’s gun went off inside the emergency room. Evanston police reported the incident led to a brief lockdown, and the suspect is now in custody. The incident highlights concerns about hospital security and mental health crisis response.
Police said the incident began around 7:26 p.m. when the Crisis Option Response Evanston Team (CARE) encountered a 28-year-old Evanston man near Taco Bell on the 1700 block of Sherman avenue. Authorities resolute he appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
The man agreed to be evaluated by paramedics and was voluntarily transported to Evanston hospital, arriving at the emergency room around 7:35 p.m. While nurses assisted with the intake procedure, the man became agitated. Hospital security entered the room, at which point the man allegedly lunged for his belongings, produced a handgun, and it discharged, according to police.
