A ​security guard at Endeavor Evanston Hospital‌ sustained injuries ⁣Thursday night when a patient’s gun‍ went off ‌inside ​the emergency ⁣room. Evanston⁢ police ⁣reported the incident led to a brief lockdown, and the suspect is now ‍in custody. The incident highlights ‌concerns about hospital security and mental health crisis response.

Police said the incident began around 7:26 p.m. when⁣ the ⁢Crisis​ Option Response Evanston Team (CARE) encountered‍ a 28-year-old Evanston man ‍near Taco Bell on ‌the 1700 block of Sherman avenue. Authorities⁣ resolute he appeared to be ‌experiencing a mental health ‌crisis.

The​ man agreed to be evaluated by paramedics and was voluntarily transported to⁢ Evanston hospital, ⁤arriving⁣ at the ‍emergency room around 7:35 p.m. While nurses assisted‌ with the intake procedure, the man ​became agitated. Hospital security entered the⁢ room, at which point‌ the man allegedly‍ lunged for ​his‍ belongings,⁢ produced a handgun, ⁤and it discharged, according to police.

Police estimate that three ‌to ⁢four⁤ shots were fired,⁣ striking a security officer.
