Evenepoel Tour de France: Time Trial Win & GC Boost
Remco Evenepoel Extends Lead as Pogačar Dominates Tour de France Time Trial, Vingegaard Struggles

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) solidified his position as a major contender in the Tour de France, extending his general classification (GC) lead after a stunning individual time trial performance. While Evenepoel celebrated a meaningful victory, gaining valuable time on his rivals, it was Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) who truly dominated the stage, showcasing a marked improvement in his time trialling ability. Simultaneously occurring, Jonas vingegaard (Visma-lease a Bike) endured a difficult day, losing considerable time and raising questions about his GC ambitions.
Pogačar’s Time trial Prowess and Evenepoel’s Growing Advantage
Pogačar delivered a breathtaking ride, demonstrating a clear focus on improving his time trial performance specifically for the Tour de France. He wasn’t just winning; he was dismantling the competition, gaining a full minute on Evenepoel – a margin few anticipated.
“We know that Tadej’s TTs are always better in the Tour than in other races, so I’m not surprised by his result,” Evenepoel acknowledged, displaying respect for his rival. “I was hoping for more advantage on him but it shows why he’s the best overall rider in the world. When he has to perform, he performs. It shows why he is the guy to beat in the tour de France onc again.”
Evenepoel, however, wasn’t disheartened. he successfully gained time on other GC contenders, exceeding expectations. “With this victory, I’ve ticked off my first goal. I didn’t expect to gain a minute on tadej but I was able to beat the other GC riders by more than a minute. It’s a bit like last year’s time trial. Copy and paste.” He now feels confident heading into the upcoming stages. “I’m one step closer to the final podium, even though the Tour is still long. With this stage win under my belt and Tim’s win we can now relax and focus on the podium in Paris.”
Vingegaard’s Difficult Day and Roglič’s Resilience
The time trial proved especially challenging for Jonas Vingegaard, who lost a significant 1:21. This setback casts a shadow over his GC hopes, though Evenepoel remains optimistic about the Visma-Lease a Bike rider’s resilience.
“Jonas is the lightest of the three of us and so in absolute power, he has a disadvantage on this course, especially with the head and tailwind,” Evenepoel explained, offering a technical insight into Vingegaard’s struggles. ”I don’t know if he will take this as a big loss. He’s mentally strong enough to take things like this. He had a pretty nice advantage on me before the TT, so that will ease his pain a bit.”
Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), returning to the tour after a challenging Giro d’Italia where he crashed out, also performed strongly, finishing ahead of Vingegaard by two seconds – a result mirrored by 11 other riders. Roglič downplayed his GC aspirations, but his performance suggests he remains a force to be reckoned with.
What Lies Ahead: Rolling Stages and Mountain Challenges
Looking ahead, Evenepoel anticipates Pogačar will aggressively defend the yellow jersey on Thursday’s rolling stage to Vire Normandie and Friday’s more demanding stage featuring the Mur de Bretagne and a hilltop finish. These stages will test the riders’ ability to navigate challenging terrain and maintain consistent power output.
The Tour de France is far from over, and the battle for the yellow jersey is intensifying. Evenepoel’s current lead, combined with Pogačar’s time trialling prowess and Vingegaard’s need to recover, sets the stage for a thrilling second week of racing. The coming stages will undoubtedly reveal more about the contenders’ strengths and weaknesses as they navigate the diverse challenges of the French countryside.
