OCHOPEE, Fla. – at least 16 people were injured Friday afternoon when two airboats collided in the vast grasslands of the Florida Everglades. The incident occured around 3:15 p.m. at Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tour in Ochopee, Collier County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
A total of 33 people were involved in the crash – 20 passengers aboard one airboat and 13 on the other. Frist responders rushed to the scene, transporting 16 injured individuals to nearby hospitals in the Naples–Marco Island area. Others received treatment at the scene.
“It was a chaotic scene,” said a witness who declined to be named. “People were shaken up, and there were a lot of emergency vehicles.”
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Greater Naples Fire Rescue, and Collier County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the incident. The cause of the collision is currently under examination by the FWC.
