Everton have been forced to move their Carabao Cup third-round match against Championship side Wolves to Wednesday, 16 September, following a scheduling conflict involving a high-profile European fixture. According to BBC Sport, European fixtures take precedence, leaving the English Football League with no option but to alter the fixture at short notice just nine days before it was due to be played.

Scheduling Conflict and Uefa Priority

The fixture change stems from a clash with a Liverpool match in European competition. According to BBC Sport, the EFL appealed to Uefa to change the Liverpool-Atletico game date, but the request was rejected because European fixtures take precedence.

Because of that rejection, the Carabao Cup calendar required a reshuffle. Everton’s match against Wolves is now slated for Wednesday, 16 September. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie against Spurs has been brought forward by a day to Tuesday, 15 September, as reported by BBC Sport.

Knock-On Effects for the Championship

BBC Sport notes that an additional consequence is the postponement of Wolves’ September fixture against Portsmouth in the Championship, which has been rescheduled to take place following the first international break on 20 October. The EFL issued an apology for the short notice. According to BBC Sport, the organization stated it was left with no option while describing Uefa’s unwillingness to co-operate as frustrating.

Broader Impact of Expanded European Competitions

The fixture disruption highlights the wider calendar strains caused by the expansion of continental tournaments. As reported by BBC Sport, the growth of Uefa’s club tournaments briefly looked like it might eliminate two-legged semi-finals in the EFL Cup.

While that specific elimination did not happen, the format changes have still triggered noticeable scheduling ripples. BBC Sport highlights that an initial EFL Cup pre-draw is now necessary because the Champions League and Europa League begin on separate evenings in September, preventing the participating clubs from being paired against each other.
