A World Where Dinosaurs Evolved Intelligence
In the 1980s, Canadian paleontologist Dale Russell proposed a engaging, if speculative, vision of an alternate evolutionary path for dinosaurs. Russell theorized that had the Cretaceous-paleogene extinction event – the meteorite impact that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs – not occurred, dinosaurs might have evolved intelligence comparable to mammals, potentially leading to creatures he termed “humanoid reptiles.”
The Troodon and the Dinosauroid Model
Russell identified Troodon, a relatively intelligent dinosaur known for its large brain-to-body ratio, as a likely ancestor for these evolved reptiles.Collaborating with sculptor Ron Séguin, Russell developed a physical model of what this hypothetical creature, dubbed a “dinosauroid”, might look like.
According to their vision, the dinosauroid would stand upright on two legs, possess a large braincase, have three fingers on each hand, and exhibit large eyes. remarkably, the model also featured the loss of a tail and teeth, and the advancement of a belly button, suggesting viviparity (live birth).
Advanced Civilization and Alternative Histories
Russell posited that over millions of years, dinosauroids could have developed advanced civilization and technology. While the dinosauroid model has been criticized as overly anthropomorphic, the theory sparked considerable debate and continues to fuel discussions about alternative Earth histories.
Coexistence or Competition?
Speculation extends to the potential relationship between evolved humanoid reptiles and Homo sapiens. Some scientists suggest that dinosauroids might have become the dominant species, potentially preventing the evolution of humans, while others propose scenarios of parallel existence, involving either cooperation or competition for resources and survival.
From Documentaries to Blockbuster Films
Despite being purely hypothetical, the concept of intelligent, evolved dinosaurs continues to capture the imagination of both scientists and the public. The topic was explored in the BBC documentary Horizon: My Pet Dinosaur
, and the creators of the Jurassic world
franchise even considered incorporating human-dinosaur hybrids into their films before ultimately choosing a different direction.
