Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former Meta executive turned whistleblower, has released a book alleging that Mark Zuckerberg’s company has prioritized its own growth over user safety and ethical considerations.
Details of the Allegations
Wynn-Williams’ book, titled “Careless People,” delves into the inner workings of Meta, raising serious questions about its operational ethics and decision-making processes.
She joined Meta in 2011 and ascended too the position of director of global public policy. However, her tenure ended in 2017 when she was dismissed.
Meta stated that the decision to terminate her employment came “after an investigation persistent that she made ‘unfounded’ statements.”
Wynn-Williams suggests in her book that “the measure was a reprisal for denouncing sexual harassment.”
meta’s Response
Meta spokesperson Nkechi Nneji dismissed the claims in “Careless People” as “antiquated” and containing “false accusations about the company’s executives.”
Nneji further characterized the author as an “activist,” stating, “Eight years ago, Sarah Wynn-Williams was fired for poor performance and toxic behavior, and an investigation at that time determined that she made misleading and unfounded accusations of harassment.”
The spokesperson added, “Since then, anti-Facebook activists have paid her, and this is simply a continuation of that work.”
Meta pursued arbitration against Wynn-Williams, alleging that her book violated a non-disparagement agreement she signed upon leaving the company.
On March 12, an emergency arbitrator “ruled that it was likely that Meta prospered its demand” that the book violated that agreement.
The arbitrator also determined that she “not make any ‘derogatory, critical or prejudicial’ comment related to Meta nor promote her book,” among other demands.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone shared a document on X, stating, “This ruling affirms that Sarah Wynn-Williams’ false and defamatory book never should have been published.”
In a follow-up post, Stone added, “this urgent legal action was necessary, because williams, more then eight years after being fired from the company, deliberately concealed the existence of her book project and… avoided the standard industry fact-checking process, so she could rush it to stores after waiting eight years.”
Reportedly, “Wynn-Williams did not formally respond to the demand of arbitration.”
Following the release of “Careless People,” Meta presented social media posts from current and former employees who are cited in the book, “in which questioned the descriptions that the author made of the company and of its events.”
Meta also ”sent a letter to the publishing house of Wynn-Williams before it was published,” threatening legal action if the book contained false statements.
The publishing house has not yet responded to requests for comments on Meta’s claims.
Focus on Joel kaplan
The book also shines a light on Joel Kaplan, Meta’s head of global affairs, particularly his role in the company’s political advertising strategy.
Wynn-Williams presents Kaplan as the architect of Meta’s strategy to sell political ads. She notes that Kaplan, who joined Facebook the same year as her, began building a ”political sales team” dedicated to inviting politicians to buy ads after becoming vice president of global public policy in 2014.
According to Wynn-Williams,”the idea is that,if politicians depend on Facebook to win elections,it will be less likely that they do something that hurts Facebook.”
The book claims that Kaplan did not vote for Trump in 2016 but supported his victory due to his “republican agenda.”
Kaplan allegedly expressed concerns that Trump would not do enough in cuts to Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.
The book further alleges that Kaplan interviewed for a cabinet position during trump’s first administration but ultimately chose to remain at Meta.
Wynn-Williams asserts that Kaplan’s closeness to Trump contributed to his increased power within the company, influencing matters related to products and policies.
“This means that decisions about political speech, content and the algorithm pass through Joel,” the book states.
Allegations of Harassment
Wynn-Williams also alleges a pattern of sexual harassment and suggests that reporting it led to her dismissal in 2017.
She recounts an instance when Kaplan allegedly pressured her to disclose the source of her bleeding after she experienced a hemorrhage during maternity leave.
she also claims that kaplan publicly stated she “looked sensual that night” at a company event in California and “rubbed his body against hers on the dance floor.”
Following an investigation, “Kaplan was acquitted and Wynn-Williams was fired shortly after,” ostensibly due to performance issues.
Meta stated that the investigation “lasted more than a month and included interviews to 17 witnesses, besides the revision of documents” presented by Wynn-Williams and others.
The company maintains that ”at that moment, determined that her accusations were unfounded.”

Wynn-Williams told NBC News, “(People) deserve to know what this big and powerful company is really like.”
