Ex-Ireland Under-20s Rugby Coach Silent on Reported Rape Trial Appearance
Former Irish Rugby Star Found Guilty of Rape in France
Paris, France – A former Irish rugby international has been found guilty of rape in a French court, marking a somber chapter in the sport’s history. Denis Coulson, who represented Ireland at the under-20 level, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in a gang rape that took place in 2016.
The case, which has garnered significant attention in both Ireland and France, involved three professional rugby players. two other players, also from Ireland, were found guilty and sentenced to 12 and 14 years respectively.
The trial, which concluded last week, centered around an incident that occurred in the southwestern French city of Agen. The victim, a young woman, testified that she was assaulted by the three players after a night out.
The verdict has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, prompting discussions about player conduct and the responsibility of sporting organizations.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” said a spokesperson for the Irish Rugby Football Union. “Our thoughts are with the victim and her family. We condemn all forms of violence and abuse, and we are committed to working with our partners to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our rugby community.”
The case has also raised questions about the culture within professional rugby, with some commentators suggesting that a culture of silence and impunity may have allowed such an incident to occur.
Coulson, who has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, has the right to appeal the verdict.
