Former Prison Guard Pleads Guilty in Contraband Scheme

SAN​ FRANCISCO —⁢ A former ‍California correctional officer, Avelino ramirez, 52, of Vallejo, admitted Thursday to wire fraud related to a scheme‍ involving planted ‍contraband at San Quentin State Prison adn the California Medical‌ Facility​ in Vacaville.

Ramirez, who faces ‌a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, is scheduled ⁣for sentencing⁢ on Sept. 18, according to the‍ U.S. ‌Attorney’s Office. ‍He is ‌currently out on bond.

Between October⁢ 2021 and February 2024,Ramirez smuggled‌ items ‍such as marijuana,cocaine,cell phones,and weapons into the facilities,prosecutors said. He then allegedly mixed the drugs with harmless substances like salt, sugar, ⁤or lawn trimmings.

The scheme‍ was designed to make Ramirez appear to be a successful officer, increasing his ‍chances for⁢ promotion and boosting his salary through fraudulent overtime​ claims related to the staged discoveries. Prosecutors said Ramirez collected ‌approximately $8,200 in overtime pay through the fraud.
