SAN FRANCISCO — A former California correctional officer, Avelino ramirez, 52, of Vallejo, admitted Thursday to wire fraud related to a scheme involving planted contraband at San Quentin State Prison adn the California Medical Facility in Vacaville.
Ramirez, who faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 18, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He is currently out on bond.
Between October 2021 and February 2024,Ramirez smuggled items such as marijuana,cocaine,cell phones,and weapons into the facilities,prosecutors said. He then allegedly mixed the drugs with harmless substances like salt, sugar, or lawn trimmings.
The scheme was designed to make Ramirez appear to be a successful officer, increasing his chances for promotion and boosting his salary through fraudulent overtime claims related to the staged discoveries. Prosecutors said Ramirez collected approximately $8,200 in overtime pay through the fraud.
