Exclusive: Chinese National Caught in Crosshairs of Anti-Espionage Law Amid Allegations of Stealing Cutting-Edge Semiconductor Secrets
It has been reported that a Korean citizen in China has been arrested and detained on charges of espionage.
According to diplomatic sources on the 28th, Mr. A, a Korean citizen in his 50s living in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, was arrested on charges of espionage at the end of last year.
The Chinese prosecutors, who later took over the case, arrested Mr. A several months ago.
It was reported that Mr. A was charged with violating the revised Anti-Espionage Act.
Since July of last year, the Chinese government has been revising and implementing the Anti-Espionage Act to expand the definition and scope of application of espionage.
This is the first time that our citizens have been arrested under this law.
Chinese investigative authorities are known to suspect that Mr. A, who worked at a Chinese semiconductor company, leaked semiconductor-related information to Korea.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We are providing necessary consular assistance immediately after becoming aware of the incident.”
