Exclusive video: Xi Jinping: China and the United States should be responsible to history, the people and the world, and become a stable source of world peace and a driving force for common development
On the afternoon of August 29, President Xi Jinping met with US President’s National Security Advisor Sullivan at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi Jinping pointed out that in the face of an international situation full of changes and chaos, countries need to unite and cooperate, rather than split and confront; people hope for openness and progress, rather than closure and regression. As two major countries, China and the United States should be responsible to history, the people and the world, and become a stable source of world peace and a promoter of common development.
Although the respective situations of China and the United States and Sino-US relations have undergone great changes, China’s goal of being committed to the stable, healthy and sustainable development of Sino-US relations has not changed, the principle of handling Sino-US relations in accordance with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation has not changed, the position of firmly safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests has not changed, and the efforts to continue the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American people have not changed. We hope that the United States will work with China, view China and China’s development with a positive and rational attitude, regard each other’s development as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and work with China to find a correct way for the two major countries to get along.
Sullivan said: “Mr. Chairman, thank you for meeting with us today. I also send my greetings to you on behalf of President Biden. Since the meeting between the leaders of the United States and China in San Francisco, the two countries have made important progress in key areas of cooperation, which you and President Biden have also discussed together. This time I am visiting China at the request of President Biden. This is also the first visit to China by the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs of the United States in eight years. I will continue to follow up on the agenda and maintain high-level strategic communication between the two countries. These are very necessary for the responsible management of bilateral relations.”
