Physical Activity May slow Cognitive Decline in Older Adults

A new study indicates that sustained physical activity offers an additional benefit to healthy living: it may stave off cognitive decline. Researchers at the University of Georgia College of Public Health analyzed data from over 13,000 individuals and found that consistent physical activity can reduce the rate of cognitive decline as people age.
Suhang Song, an assistant professor in health policy and management and lead author of the study, emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent physical activity throughout life. “We found that longer and more frequent engagement in physical activity was associated with delayed cognitive decline,” Song said. ”These protective benefits grew over the length of the study.”
The study, which examined data from the health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative survey following adults 50 and older for 16 years, considered various levels of physical activity. Vigorous activities included running and jogging, while moderate activities encompassed gardening, dancing, and stretching. Mild activities included vacuuming, laundry, and home repairs.
The findings indicated that individuals who sustained regular physical activity habits experienced a substantially slower rate of cognitive decline. As an example, increasing vigorous physical activity from one to three times per month to once per week correlated with a measurable slowing of cognitive decline. Similarly, increasing moderate physical activity from once per week to multiple times per week also led to a slower rate of decline over time.
“The improvement of the decline rate may seem modest,but it builds up over time,” Song said. “If this slower decline continues, it could perhaps delay the onset of dementia by many years, giving people more time to live independently and maintain quality of life.”
