Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has indicated that the upcoming science-fiction role-playing game Exodus, developed by Archetype Games, is positioned to address a long-standing void in the space-opera RPG market. Speaking on the project’s potential, Cocks suggested that the title could satisfy players who have been waiting for a successor to the Mass Effect series.
The development of Exodus is led by a team that includes former BioWare employees, including individuals whom Cocks described as being responsible for some of his favorite games. According to Cocks, the core concept behind the project was basically D&D in space
.
Cocks identified a clear market necessity for a narrative-driven space RPG, noting the significant amount of time that has passed since the release of a highly regarded Mass Effect title. Based on his own play sessions, the CEO expressed confidence that the game is meeting those expectations.
The current landscape for the genre has been characterized by a gap of nine years since the last major entry in the Mass Effect franchise. While Mass Effect: Andromeda was released in 2017, it received a lukewarm reception and failed to reach the prestige of the original trilogy. With no confirmed release date for a fifth Mass Effect installment, the market for high-budget, story-focused space RPGs has remained largely open.
Beyond its spiritual connection to the space-opera genre, Exodus is aiming to evolve technical aspects of the experience. The developers intend to change the way players explore space worlds, moving away from established norms to offer a new approach to galactic navigation, and discovery.
Recent gameplay details have highlighted a focus on deep dialogue systems and a complex framework for player choices. These systems are designed to provide significant narrative depth, ensuring that player decisions have a meaningful impact on the game’s progression.
Exodus is scheduled for release in 2027. The title will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Regarding the project’s trajectory, Cocks highlighted the quality of the development team and the strength of the initial idea as primary drivers for the investment.
We had this great team of people, a group of former BioWare employees, some of those responsible for my favorite games of all time. And they had a fantastic idea, basically D&D in space. And I jumped on board.
Chris Cocks, CEO of Hasbro
