Experience Magic: Lyric Theatre’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Starring D. Lance Marsh
Oklahoma City’s “A Christmas Carol” Returns
The Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City has begun its annual production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The show opened on November 23, 2024, to a full house excited to experience this festive classic.
This year features a fresh production that started in 2023. It includes impressive flying wirework, ghostly entrances, and a striking puppet representing “Christmas Yet-to-Come.”
D. Lance Marsh reprises his role as Ebenezer Scrooge. He first played the character in 2023, presenting a more imposing figure than traditional interpretations. Marsh’s 6-foot-2, 250-pound presence offers a new take on the notorious miser, making him a figure of fear for other characters.
Marsh views his physicality as vital to shaping Scrooge. He noted, “They cast me, so they must want a big physical presence.” He adds that there’s no requirement in Dickens’ text for Scrooge to be frail.
Unlike the other characters, Scrooge refrains from participating in the musical numbers. Instead, he observes the characters enjoying traditional carols and hymns, which contrast with his negativity. Marsh explains that Scrooge finds music distasteful, making him a reluctant spectator.
The music in this production expresses joy, community, and humanity, serving as a vehicle for transformation. Scrooge’s eventual acceptance of music symbolizes his change of heart.
The show runs until December 27, 2024, at the Lyric at the Plaza Theatre. For tickets and showtimes, visit lyrictheatreokc.com.
