A team from KUT spent an entire day on Sixth Street to explore its unique sounds. They recorded various experiences between Congress Avenue and I-35 during the South by Southwest music festival on March 14.
Meet the People of Sixth Street

Jorell: Moved from San Antonio, he works nights at an apartment. He appreciates Austin’s welcoming atmosphere.
“It’s easier to just be yourself. There’s no judgment here.” -
Jesse: Part of the Downtown Austin Alliance’s Ambassador program. His focus is on safety and hospitality.
“I take pride in engaging with people. The world needs more light and love.” -
Shaun and Matt: Shaun is a filmmaker; Matt is a talent agent from Los Angeles. They bonded over a film screened at the festival.
“It’s like meeting a character from a movie. I’m glad to have met him.” -
Baby D: A rapper from St. Louis. He overcame stage fright and hopes for meaningful opportunities.
“I hope the right people hear me and help me grow.” -
Thomas: A bartender who showcases his skills with shaker tricks.
“I prefer entertaining people over just serving drinks.” - Julian: Brought his Burmese pythons to Sixth Street. He educates people about them.
“Pythons lay eggs, while boas give live birth. Many confuse the two.”
