Explore Marco Polo’s Journey: VR Exhibition Celebrates 700 Years of Adventure on the Silk Road

November 23, 2024 Catherine Williams World

A new virtual reality (VR) exhibition called “Legendary Journey: Marco Polo and the World of the Silk Road” opened at Guangzhou Library on November 23. This exhibition marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death.

Visitors can use VR equipment to experience Marco Polo’s journey from Venice to China. The exhibition is organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Guangzhou and Guangzhou Library.

The VR film is part of a 3D project created by an Italian company. It digitally restores sites like the Venice Canal, Lut Desert, Pamir Mountains, Taklimakan Desert, and the Yuan Dynasty site of Xanadu (1271-1368). Visitors will see these locations through Marco Polo’s perspective.

The exhibition emphasizes historical accuracy. Attendees will view the Venetian port and its busy dock, explore the prosperity of the Yuan Dynasty, and witness East-West cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.

What are the key historical⁣ events highlighted ⁤in the ‌”Legendary Journey” exhibition featuring Marco Polo?

Interview with Dr. Elena Rossi, Historian and Curator of “Legendary Journey: Marco Polo and the World of the Silk Road”

NewsDirectory3: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Rossi. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the “Legendary Journey” virtual reality exhibition?

Dr. Elena Rossi: Thank you for having me. The inspiration ‍came from the ‍desire to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death while also bringing his extraordinary⁣ journey to life through immersive technology. We wanted to create an educational experience that highlights the historical significance of Polo’s travels along the Silk Road and his profound influence on East-West relations.

NewsDirectory3: How does the VR technology enhance the visitor experience compared to a traditional exhibition?

Dr. Rossi: VR technology allows visitors ‌to virtually step into the shoes of Marco Polo. Instead of merely observing artifacts or reading⁢ about his journey, attendees can experience the ‍sights and sounds of iconic locations like the Venice Canal and the bustling Yuan Dynasty port. This sensory engagement fosters ⁢a deeper understanding and appreciation ⁤of historical events.

NewsDirectory3: The exhibition is said to⁢ emphasize historical accuracy.‌ How did your team ensure this?

Dr. Rossi: We collaborated closely with historians⁢ and cultural‍ experts to accurately recreate significant sites from Marco Polo’s journey. The VR film is based on historical research, and we paid special attention to environmental details, architecture, and cultural elements to ⁢ensure authenticity. Our goal ‌was to provide an educational yet captivating experience that respects the legacy of Marco Polo.

NewsDirectory3: The event also celebrates 20 years of the China-Italy strategic‌ partnership. How does Marco Polo fit‌ into this relationship?

Dr. Rossi: ‌Marco Polo is an enduring symbol of cultural exchange and diplomacy between Italy and China. His travels not ⁣only paved the way for trade but also enriched both cultures through shared knowledge and experiences. By commemorating him, we hope to strengthen the ties between our nations and promote mutual understanding, which is particularly relevant in today’s ‍globalized world.

NewsDirectory3: Can you elaborate on the interactive section of the exhibition?

Dr. Rossi: Absolutely! The interactive section⁣ invites visitors to engage with traditional Eastern goods⁢ such as silk, tea, and porcelain. They can experience what it might have ⁢been‌ like for Marco Polo to interact with these items by completing a virtual “purchase order.” This hands-on approach helps⁢ to demystify historical⁢ trade practices and illustrates the richness of cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.

NewsDirectory3: What do you hope visitors take⁣ away from this exhibition?

Dr. Rossi: I hope visitors leave with a greater appreciation for Marco Polo’s journey and a curiosity to learn more about the interconnectedness of our world. We want to inspire future⁢ generations to explore different cultures and recognise the importance of dialog and cooperation across borders, just as⁤ Marco Polo did in his time.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you, Dr. Rossi, for‌ sharing your insights. We look⁢ forward to seeing how visitors respond to this unique exhibition!

Dr. Rossi: Thank you! I’m excited for everyone to ⁣experience “Legendary Journey.”

Additionally, the event celebrates 20 years of the China-Italy strategic partnership. Valerio De Parolis, the consul general of Italy, said that this year is important for Italy-China relations. He believes that Marco Polo’s legacy enhances understanding of Chinese culture in Europe. De Parolis hopes the exhibition inspires future generations to explore the world and build connections.

The exhibition includes an interactive section featuring silk, tea, porcelain, and other eastern goods. Visitors can complete a “purchase order” with Marco Polo.

The exhibition runs until December 31.
