JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles: Exhibition Opening and Workshops
Exhibition Details
JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles will open the exhibition “Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit” on November 20, 2024. This exhibition honors Japanese daiku, or master carpenters. It will run until January 22, 2025. The gallery is open daily: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free, and walk-ins are welcome as space permits.
Opening Celebration
On November 20, there will be a Curator Talk featuring Marcelo Nishiyama, who oversees the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum. This discussion will take place in the JAPAN HOUSE Salon.
Danjiri Wood Carving Events
From November 29 to December 1, 2024, JAPAN HOUSE will celebrate traditional danjiri wood carving. This event will feature live demonstrations and a hands-on workshop.
Live Demonstrations
Master craftsman Akihiko Maeda will create a danjiri wood carving. Visitors can observe his techniques from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This demonstration allows attendees to see the craftsmanship firsthand and participate by using traditional tools.
Workshop Participation
On November 30, a workshop will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will carve a wooden plaque under Maeda’s guidance. This workshop costs $50, and advanced registration is required.
