Explore the Night Sky: New Observatory in Kanab, Southern Utah

Explore the Night Sky: New Observatory in Kanab, Southern Utah

December 1, 2024 Catherine Williams Business

Southern Utah’s Kanab boasts stunning sandstone formations and beautiful destinations like Paria Canyon, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, slot canyons, and Lake Powell. But what about its night life?

The Stellar Vista Observatory and Kane County Water Conservancy District plan to enhance night activities by building an educational astronomical observatory at Jackson Flat Reservoir. This project aims to showcase the region’s dark sky for stargazing.

Mike Noel, general manager of the water district, emphasized that this location offers excellent opportunities for dark sky observing. The observatory will provide a hub for educational programs and community events related to astronomy. He hopes it will inspire young people to spark a love for science.

Rich Csenge, founder of the nonprofit, highlighted the value of dark skies as a heritage treasure and source of inspiration. He believes experiencing a star-filled sky fosters humility and a broader perspective.

Over the last five years, organizers have noted increasing public interest in astronomy and have developed an architectural plan for the observatory with local architect Robert Kaczowka. They also plan to implement community outreach programs.

The observatory will offer various public activities, including free monthly stargazing events, private night experiences for families, and solar science programs for daytime sun observations. The facility aims to be accessible to the community rather than remote.

Currently, the observatory is in its proof of concept phase, focusing on the opportunities at Jackson Flat Reservoir. Phase one financing has been secured through grants from the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation and the Kane County Recreation and Transportation Special Service District, along with private funds raised from the Night Sky Experience program.

Under the agreement, Kane County Water Conservancy District will retain ownership of the land, while the observatory will manage programming and events. The vision is to foster a deeper connection to astronomy and enhance community engagement in learning about the night sky.
