Exploring Art and Authenticity: An Interview with McKenna Blackshire at Wesleyan
Interview with McKenna Blackshire ’25
McKenna Blackshire is a writer, filmmaker, and musician at Wesleyan University. She spoke with The Argus about her journey in the arts, her experiences, and her future plans.
How did you get involved with The Shed?
McKenna started as a DJ for WESU (88.1 FM). During training, she interned with experienced DJs. After a late-night ride home with Joseph Cohen, he invited her to join a group focused on live music. They set up small concerts in a shed in her backyard, recording performances and sharing them online. This group helped many student bands share their music.
You now live in the house with the shed. How does that feel?
It’s serendipitous for McKenna. She discovered the old Instagram password for The Shed was tied to her address, 58 Fountain Ave. This connection felt special.
Why did you choose to study English and film?
McKenna always had a passion for art but struggled to stick with one medium. Writing provided her an outlet to express herself. As she became frustrated with traditional writing, she turned to film, seeing it as a way to better capture her ideas.
Did growing up in Los Angeles influence your art?
Yes, McKenna feels Los Angeles exposed her to diverse arts and opportunities. However, she does not wish to live there again. She appreciates the opportunities to explore her creativity without limitations.
How have you changed since freshman year?
McKenna has become more confident. Initially, she worried about fitting into specific roles. Over time, she learned there are many ways to be an artist. Through her connections at Wesleyan, she has found confidence in her decisions.
What are your hopes after graduation?
McKenna plans to apply for a residency at the Schomburg Center in Harlem. She received a grant to explore the Harlem art scene. She and a friend plan to move to the city and she hopes to continue making music and capturing experiences through film.
What is important to you in art?
McKenna sees art as a way to preserve memories. She views herself as a vessel for experiences, things, and people. Her recent project focuses on this idea. She values moments of joy and connection, which she wants to capture in her work.
