Opera Review: “Blue” at Lyric Opera of Chicago

“Blue” is a powerful opera that addresses the deaths of Black men at the hands of police. Focused on a Black couple in Harlem, the story revolves around their unnamed 16-year-old son, known only as “The Son.” The work won the 2020 Award for Best New Opera from the Music Critics Association of North America and premiered at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, running through December 1.

The opera, composed by Jeanine Tesori, combines heartfelt storytelling with compelling music. Tazewell Thompson wrote the libretto, infusing it with cultural significance. The narrative begins with the couple’s marriage and the birth of their son, quickly evolving to include the pain and anger associated with his death.

The second act explores the parents’ grief as they navigate their emotions and seek solace in their community and church. The choice not to depict the son’s death directly allows audiences to reflect on the broader implications of such tragedies.

The cast includes ten performers, creating an intimate chamber opera experience. Travon D. Walker, as The Son, delivers a memorable performance filled with anger and resentment. Kenneth Kellogg, playing The Father, showcases his vocal strength and acting skills, effectively conveying deep emotional turmoil.

Thompson, who is also the director, allows the story to unfold naturally. The set design, created by Donald Eastman, is simple yet effective, portraying historical Harlem with minimal furniture. Colored lighting adds atmosphere without distraction.

“Blue” is relevant and poignant. It questions whether its themes can resonate beyond the present moment. Through its storytelling and music, it aims to connect with audiences on a fundamental level.
