This weekend, the Festival de Teatro Puertorriqueño presents “Las Suertes: Un Archivo de Fantasmas” at Teatro Victoria Espinosa in Santurce, San Juan.
The production, described as a fantasy drama, is part of the ongoing festival celebrating Puerto Rican theatre and performance arts.
Teatro Victoria Espinosa, located in the historic Santurce neighborhood, was acquired by the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña in 1987 and officially inaugurated on October 18, 2007, as part of the 43rd International Theatre Festival.
The venue was designated Sala de Teatro Experimental Victoria Espinosa under Law 126 of July 21, 2000, and named in honor of Dr. Victoria Espinosa for her contributions to Puerto Rican theatre.
Dr. Victoria Espinosa (1922–2019) was a Puerto Rican theatre director and academic who served as Professor of Theatre at the University of Puerto Rico and directed over 120 plays during her career.
She founded the Puerto Rico Theatrón Theater Workshop and the Puerto Rico Actors’ Association, and was recognized as the “grand dame” of Puerto Rican theatre.
The festival highlights Puerto Rican arts and culture through theatrical works that reflect the island’s history, identity, and creative expression.
