A significant scientific landmark on the peninsula is the Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3. Located in the Pechengsky District of the Murmansk Oblast, near the border with Norway, it is the deepest human-made hole on Earth since 1979.
The borehole was the result of a Soviet scientific research program initiated in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s to penetrate as deeply as possible into the Earth’s crust. Drilling began in 1970 using Uralmash-4E and Uralmash-15000 series rigs.
The project attained a maximum true vertical depth of 12,262 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989. While the borehole was originally intended to reach 7,000 metres, it significantly exceeded that goal before the site was closed in 1995.
