A suspect has been arrested following an explosion at the headquarters of the Dutch political party D66 in The Hague on Thursday evening, May 7, 2026. The blast, caused by a firework bomb thrown through the building’s letterbox, resulted in minor damage but no injuries, according to police and party officials. The incident has raised concerns about political targeting and security in the Netherlands.

The explosion occurred around 21:00 local time at the D66 office on Lange Houtstraat. A D66 spokesperson confirmed that the device was a firework bomb, which detonated inside the building while staff were present. “There were people in the building at the time, but no one was hurt. They were understandably shocked,” the spokesperson told NOS. Police quickly cordoned off the area and began an investigation, with a suspect taken into custody shortly afterward.

D66 has described the attack as deliberate and not a coincidence. “It’s not entirely clear where this comes from, but it will not be by accident that this happened to us,” a party representative said. The spokesperson also warned staff to stay away from the premises, though the extent of the damage remains under assessment.

This represents not the first time the D66 office has been targeted. In September 2025, windows at the same location were smashed during clashes following an anti-immigration protest on the Malieveld in The Hague. Police faced projectiles, including bottles and stones, during the unrest, and thirty individuals have since been convicted for their roles in the incident, including the destruction of the D66 office windows.

The Dutch police are treating the latest incident as a deliberate act and are investigating the motives behind the attack. Meanwhile, D66 has called for vigilance and security measures to be maintained, emphasizing the need for a calm and measured response to such acts of violence.
