Explosive Attack Destroys Monument to ‘El Chapo’s’ Late Son in Culiacán’s City Club

Early Thursday, January 23, an explosion rocked a bustling Culiacán shopping center, destroying a cenotaph dedicated to Édgar Guzmán López, the son of former cartel kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. The blast occurred around 8:00 AM in the City Club’s parking lot, reportedly caused by unknown assailants.

The explosion left little but a two-meter-tall cross standing and scattered cement fragments. A nearby blue car was also damaged and showed signs of gunfire impacts, according to videos circulating online.

Sinaloa’s Fiscalía General has taken charge of the investigation, aiming to discern the type of explosive used.

Who Was Édgar Guzmán López and How Did He Die?

Born on May 31, 1986, Édgar Guzmán López was the eldest son of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán and Griselda Guadalupe López Pérez. Known as ‘El Moreno,’ he was the brother of Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López, the current leaders of ‘Los Chapitos,’ who are currently held by U.S. authorities pending trials in Chicago.

At just 22 years old, Édgar was brutally gunned down on May 8, 2008, in Culiacán’s Tres Ríos district, alongside his cousins César Ariel Loera and Arturo Meza Cazares. While parked at a local shopping center, they were ambushed by armed attackers, who opened fire, reportedly firing over 500 bullets.

The motive for his killing remains a subject of debate, but many point to a power struggle between ‘El Chapo’s’ Sinaloa cartel and the Beltrán Leyva organization. Some theories suggest it was a case of mistaken identity, as assailants may have mistaken Édgar and his companions for Beltrán Leyva affiliates.

A Monument’s Legacy: EDTA’s Tragic History

Following Édgar’s murder, a cenotaph erected in his memory at the crime scene became an annual site of remembrance. Floral arrangements, beer cans, and votive jars often adorn the site, particularly on significant dates.

In May 2024, the cenotaph was adorned with a sumptuous floral display and two oversized letters ‘E’ and ‘G’ made from red roses, commemorating the 16-year anniversary of Édgar’s tragic demise. Similar tributes have marked his birthday (May 31), Día de Muertos (November 2), Christmas (December 25), and New Year’s Day (January 1).

This brazen attack, targeting a monument dedicated to Édgar Guzmán López, sends a chilling message about the ongoing struggle for power and control in Sinaloa. While the perpetrators remain unknown, the audacity of the act underscores the volatile nature of the region’s drug trade. The destruction of this memorial, erected just months ago, signifies a potential shift in the balance of power, raising questions about the future stability of Sinaloa and the legacy of El Chapo’s family.Only time will tell what ramifications this explosion will have on the complex web of alliances and rivalries that define the region’s underworld.
