EU Market Alert: 6 Popular Shampoos Pose Health Risks
All products identified in the European warning system have some immediate risk for human consumption, and are in stores in EU countries or can be ordered online.
6 Shampoos Banned from the EU Market
- Schwarzkopf (Weighed Down Hair Repair)
- Palmolive (shampoo with pearl and almond)
- Clear (250 ml), against male hair loss
- Pantene (nature’s fusion vitality)
- Elvive by L’OREAL PARIS, anti-dandruff, 50 ml
- Kelemata (delicate shampoo-250ml)
These shampoos contain dangerous chemicals, namely: 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) and propionaldehyde (BMHCA), banned in cosmetic products. BMHCA can harm the reproductive system, fetal health, and cause skin sensitization.
The number of warnings is increasing for various product categories, including chemical products, baby care items, clothing, textiles, and fashion, reports InfoCons.
The Dangers of 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) Propionaldehyde (BMHCA)
The substance 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), also known as Lyral, is banned in cosmetic products in the EU. As of August 2021, Lyral has been banned due to its allergenic potential.
The decision was made by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), which concluded that this substance could cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals. Following these evaluations, the European Union updated the Cosmetics Regulation (EC Regulation No. 1223/2009) and placed a ban on the use of Lyral and other ingredients with a high allergic risk in cosmetic products.
