Exposed and Exposed to Loss: Cash App Users Face Devastating Consequences of Massive Data Breach
Cash App Users Eligible for Thousands of Dollars in Data Breach Settlement
If you’ve had a Cash App account in the last six years, you may be eligible to claim thousands of dollars as a result of a class action settlement. The company offered a $15 million settlement earlier this year after two security incidents.
The first related breach occurred in December 2021, when a former employee downloaded a report containing information on more than 8 million users. This includes your name, brokerage account numbers, and, in some cases, the holdings and value of your investment portfolio. Cash App disclosed the incident in April 2022.
The consolidated class action complaint alleged that Cash App and parent company Block failed to take sufficient security measures to prevent another data breach. This included Cash App’s person-to-person payment service. According to the plaintiff, ”In 2023, an unauthorized user accessed certain Cash App accounts using a laundered phone number.”
Cash App and Block denied any wrongdoing. They say the settlement is not an admission of liability.
Eligibility and Claim Process
If you had a Cash App account between August 23, 2018 and August 20 of this year, you may be eligible to claim it. The settlement will cover up to $2,500 in out-of-pocket expenses for the violation and up to three hours of lost time at $25 an hour. People who have suffered financial losses but have not yet received compensation can also file a complaint.
To submit a claim, you must complete the online form on the settlement website by 2pm ET on November 19th. The final hearing in the case is scheduled for December 16.
