Fair Trade Commission Cracks Down on Bid Rigging in Machine Tool Purchases

The Fair Trade Commission has ordered corrective action against five companies involved in bid rigging in machine tool purchases. The companies, including Korea Yamazaki Mazak Co., Ltd. and Doogwang Machinery Co., Ltd., were found to have colluded on bid prices and proposals, resulting in unfair competition and waste of public institutions’ budgets.

According to the investigation, Korea Yamazaki Mazak and Doogwang Machinery had jointly prepared bid proposals and shared bidding prices in five separate bids conducted by Chungnam Techno Park and Jeonnam Techno Park between December 2019 and October 2022. This resulted in Korea Yamazaki Mazak winning four of the bids, with the winning bid amount being close to 100% of the allocated budget.

The Fair Trade Commission has imposed a fine of 174 million won on the companies involved and has ordered them to take corrective action to prevent similar incidents in the future. This measure is significant in that it highlights the commission’s commitment to rooting out bid rigging and promoting fair competition in the public sector.

The Fair Trade Commission plans to continue monitoring bid rigging in the public sector and will take strict action against any companies found to be violating the law. This move is expected to promote transparency and fairness in public procurement processes and prevent waste of public funds.
